Imagine an engagement photoshoot where laughter echoes over crystal-clear waters and moments of tranquility blend seamlessly with bursts of excitement and chaos. That was exactly the experience we had recently on Lake Huron for these sailboat engagement photos.
Alyssa and Julian, our adventurous and laid-back couple, brought an infectious easy-going energy that set the tone for what would unfold. Alyssa, a nurse by profession, exuded kindness and warmth, making everyone feel at ease. Julian, with his confident and humorous demeanor, kept us entertained.
For this session, the weather added its own drama to the shoot. Initially, it was uncertain due to forecasts of lightning and thunderstorms right up to our arrival at the marina. Fortunately, we found ourselves blessed with a surprising turn with just a few droplets of water and the most breathtaking sunset imaginable. Dark clouds loomed on one side, while the other was clear—a metaphor for the unpredictability and beauty of nature.
Our evening began at Port Franks Marina, meeting with the generous owner of our sailboat for the photos. She told us how those in the marina often had barbecues together in the common area, painting a picture of the vibrant community. Jumping on the sailboat, equipped with a digital camera and two film cameras, we set off from the dock.
After the couple took turns steering the sailboat, we celebrated by raising glasses of champagne in a toast. Throughout our shoot, the quiet presence of parents snapping photos from the back of the boat added a heartwarming touch. Their joy in witnessing our escapades made the evening even more special.
Bringing our time to an end, we gathered at the owners’ dock, reminiscing over cold beers about the evening’s events, our sailboat engagement photos, and past connections. The scenery served as the perfect combination of water and sunset.
Sunsets on the water are undeniably dreamy, evoking an aspirational vibe that captures the raw beauty of nature. As the sun dipped below the horizon reflecting in the crystal-clear waters, it was a scene straight out of a postcard.
Lake Huron served as a vivid reminder — not that one was needed — of just how enchanting any session by the water can be. Any shoots by the water are a personal favourite of mine. There’s something magical about the interplay of light on the waves, the serene ambiance, and the soothing sounds of the water’s gentle lapping.
