A shoot with the sweetest couple alongside collaborating with local vendors is a great combo. I wanted to do a couples photoshoot in a vineyard that felt like we were on vacation in Italy, and it didn’t disappoint. This southern Ontario vineyard engagement session had a little bit of everything: wandering the vineyard, sharing a glass of local wine with a charcuterie board, and enjoying the sunset view of Stone Crop Acres. All of her clothing pieces were from none other than Kelsey’s boutique, Love and Lee, which had the perfect outfits for this setting.

Obviously, being documentary style, I love those naturally candid shots that show who you two are together. To ease you into the session, I usually have you walk back and forth, maybe holding hands or lightly bumping into one another as you walk. This helps you get used to the camera and not feel like you’re performing, just being yourselves.
I may ask you to do a spin, dance, or even lightly jog. I love any kind of movement that gets you interacting, because nothing translates better than when you’re feeling comfortable. That’s exactly what I did during this southern Ontario vineyard engagement session. They twirled, walked hand in hand through the vineyard, and cheers’ed with a glass of Stone Crop Acres wine. We even threw the drone up for some wandering shots to capture the space from above.

There’s something really special about the colours that come out when film develops. As unpredictable as film can be, I don’t think I could ever shoot a couples session without it anymore. Here are a few of my favourite film shots from the vineyard.

Changing up the setting, we moved onto the patio where a charcuterie board and games were waiting. Props can really help make a session feel more comfortable, because sometimes you just don’t know what to do with your hands. So having things like cards, food or a even glass of wine (big sacrifice here) can make the session feel more relaxed.

A fun way to end the shoot is with flash photography. Sometimes by the end of the shoot I try to squeeze in some shots with flash to add a little more variety if it fits the vibe and I love the way these ones turned out, especially with the fan as a prop.
